Revolting Women

8 Mar - 8 Mar

Our second concert continues our theme showcasing music from women throughout the centuries.

Join one of London’s newest exciting music ensembles, the Verdier Trio, for a short evening of music in flight. Powerful female characters from the Baroque era to the 19th Century show the joy of lovers on the run, in exile, rogue saints and more!

The Verdier Trio has local roots. Soprano – Matilda Dawes, Flautist – Juliet Beadle and Pianist – Celia Margalef met whilst studying at Trinity Laban Music Conservatoire and began performing to great acclaim with their inaugural concert held to a sold out crowd in Faversham last year. They have a passion for performing lesser known works by female composers. They pride themselves on an obvious close working friendship and easy style of communicating with an audience.

For hundreds of years composers have loved writing for the sonorous grouping of soprano, flute and piano. This combination has been popular from the Baroque period through the French romantic era and up to the present day. In particular composers are inspired to think of birdsong and from this the Trio take their name: Verdier or Greenfinch in French.

Matilda Dawes is a young local soprano and choral conductor. Since graduating with a first from Trinity Laban Conservatoire Matilda has founded the Verdier Trio – for voice, flute and piano, and Cantwara – a harp and voice duo. Both have recently performed at festivals and churches in Kent and will be giving their first London performances later on in this concert series at the Space. Alongside a busy performing career, Matilda also conducts Greenwich Carers Voices and works with the London Youth Choir Cambiata Boys as an assistant leader. Matilda is taught by Patricia Rozario OBE and Anna Boucher. As the new resident musician at the Space she is looking forward to producing and performing her first concert series – Revolting Women!
