About
Us

The Space is a theatre on the Isle of Dogs, managed by St Paul’s Arts Trust (registered charity no 801587). Our aims as an organisation are to increase access to the arts and provide support for new artists.

We provide opportunities for local residents to engage with the arts and a range of platforms for performance and artist development. Our activities include hosting live performances (throughout the year at the Space and during the Summer at the Roof Garden), delivering workshops and performance opportunities through our participatory theatre project and bringing people together for arts festivals and special events.

Our patrons are Sir Ian McKellen and Marie McLaughlin.

The Building

The Space, formerly St Paul’s church, was built by a Presbyterian mission, that had formed in the area around 1856. The site was acquired from the Earl of Strafford in 1859 and the church constructed to the design of T.E. Knightley. The foundation stone was laid by John Scott Russell, the Scottish builder of the “Great Eastern” ship, who ran the nearby shipyard at Burrells Wharf. The church was built by J.& F.J. Woods of Mile End for a cost of £750, excluding the cost of extra foundations.

In 1866 attendances had fallen to 6, but possibly due to the effects of a depression, there were more than 100 worshippers by the following year. This resulted in the construction of a gallery at the west end. In 1906 a nondescript two storey addition was added to the rear to provide space for a vestry, classrooms, and a kitchen. The extension was designed by T Phillips Figgis and built by the Limehouse firm of Harris and Wardop.

Following the closure of the London Docks large parts of the Isle of Dogs went into a phase of decline. St Paul’s ceased being used as a church in 1972 and the congregation moved to a new church at Island House, Castalia Square. The building was then used by the owners of the adjacent site for testing crane components. A large window in the south elevation was removed and the two large doors that are seen today inserted.

In 1989 a locally based group of individuals created the St Paul’s Arts Trust with a view to taking responsibility for the building, restoring it and creating a venue for the arts.

The success of the Trust has owed a lot to the knowledge and energy of its Project Director, Robert Richardson, who had significant experience of projects of this nature and has seen the scheme through from start to finish. A first phase of underpinning and emergency works was completed in 1993. Work on the restoration and conversion began in 1994 to the designs of architects Claxton ‘Auvergne Collings of Fulham. Significant grant funding was given by the London Docklands Development Corporation, English Heritage, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the Heritage of London Trust, the Pilgrim Trust, Esmee Fairbairn Charitable Trust and the National Lottery, via the Arts Council of England.

The Space opened in 1996 and has been providing creative opportunities for local residents and support for a wide range of artists ever since.

The Management

The Space was managed by Robert Richardson for the first four years. Robert had very wide ranging interests, from classical and jazz music to being a keen supporter of Nottingham Forest and a proficient cross country skier. Robert went on to become part of the team that embarked on the £15m project to transform the derelict Roundhouse building in Camden into the lively and thriving art centre it has now become.

When Robert left in 2000, he handed the reins to Polly Schomberg, who had been working at the Space as Centre Administrator. Polly continued the themes of music and theatrical performance but made comedy nights her specialty. Polly drew in a range of talent from those starting out to some well-known acts such as Al Murray and Harry Hill. Polly oversaw the 5th anniversary of the Space before heading off to a new journey in Australia and eventually becoming Visitor Experience Consultant at The National Trust.

An inspired arts programmer and skilled fundraiser, Ali Forbes was Director of the Space from 2001-2005. Ali brought a new energy to the Space with band nights and cabaret events proving very popular with the local audience on the Isle of Dogs. Ali had a great eye for talent and gave many new theatre companies opportunities to perform. One such company, Les Enfants Terribles led by Oliver Lansley, have gone on to receive critical acclaim, been nominated for and won industry awards and now are making awards themselves as they aim to support other new companies starting out. Ali brought big names such as Steven Berkoff and Linda Marlowe to the Space.

Current Director, Adam Hemming, joined in 2004 as Centre Administrator before stepping up to the Director role. Adam’s background as a theatre director led to the formation of Space Productions and the venue’s focus on theatre above music, comedy and dance. Adam created the SpaceWorks participatory theatre programme, oversaw the 10th, 15th and 20th anniversaries of the Space and has been largely responsible for the development and growth of the organisation over the last 10+ years.

Mike Carter

July 2019 - present

Mike first came to The Space with a short piece of writing for the appropriately named "Theatre of Inspirations" Scratch night back in 2009. That piece "The Trunk" made a return for the Space's 15th Anniversary show and then on to a full production in 2014. He has been a regular visitor since contributing to numerous new writing initiatives alongside sharing his own work. Over recent years he has read hundreds of submissions, alongside a fabulous reader team, for the Space's Script Space new writing initiative. He was dramaturg for the 2019 Foreword Festival which saw four talented new writers share distinct and powerful voices with new plays. Alongside his work at The Space, Mike is a founder of The London Playwriting Lab workshops, hosts the monthly South London Writers' Group and co-hosts Playwriting at The Pit and Clapham Omnibus workshops. This email address is to contact Mike regarding our literary work and invite him to your work. To submit a script to the Space, please check out our annual ScriptSpace scheme.

Bethany Sharp

October 2021 - Present

Bethany has watched plays at the Space since 2014 and was programmed to bring a show in June 2020... Her digital audio theatre company, Frequency Theatre, has released ninety new plays by writers in the UK and internationally. Tice Oakfield

April 2020 - present

Tice Oakfield is a composer, writer and performer. After his BA in Musical Theatre at the Fontys Conservatoire (NL), he was accepted into the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama on the MA Classical Acting course. In addition to this he did an intense summer course at the Moscow Art Theatre School (RU) where he undertook more in-depth research for his dissertation: 'Developing Observation Skills', analysing the theatre practitioner Stanislavski’s work. Tice was nominated for the Young Top Talent Award at the Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts. He was awarded two scholarships to continue his arts studies abroad. His diverse background in different elements of performance (music, movement, puppetry and acting) resonate strongly within his work. His UK productions include The Fantastical Tale of the Boy on the Run, The Astonishing Singing Fish, The Musical Detective Agency, Me and My Leprechaun, The Musical Theatre Studio and Once Upon a Glass of Milk. His solo and duo performances have toured the UK, Netherlands and Belgium. Other theatre credits include Mihai in Rock Paper Scissors, Adolph in Creditors and Ebenezer Scrooge in the UK tour of A Christmas Carol. He is a movie trailer voice for MTV & Nickelodeon co-branded movie promos. You can also listen to him in A Greek Drama on BBC Radio 4. Tice has hosted many of The Space’s festivals and fundraisers. ‘I agree with Brecht, theatre should be as entertaining as a football match. There should always be a form of excitement on stage, in the performance and in the performer’s work.’ He often brings this into practice through audience participation and balloon sword fights. Fun and accessibility are at the heart of what he makes.

A registered charity (no 801587) since May 1989, St Pauls Arts Trust was formed with the aim of: establishing an arts centre (the Space) for the Isle of Dogs and its neighbourhood, and to promote and encourage the arts to its inhabitants.

We would like to recognise the work of our founder, Robert Richardson and of all previous members of the board of trustees.  Without their efforts, the Space wouldn’t have been able to continue to grow and develop in the way that it has.

Our current trustees are Pradeep Jeyaratnam-Joyner (Chair),  Andy Straw (Treasurer), Kate Osborne (Vice Chair), Lesley Young, Martin Young, Caroline Jeyaratnam-Joyner, Cole Smith, and Elizabeth Dowd

You can contact the board of trustees here.

We are extremely grateful to Matt Badenoch photography for creating this virtual tour. Visit his website at MattBadenoch.com.
