Empty Mirrors

10 Sep - 14 Sep

Three women, each carrying unvoiced anger and frustration and facing an uncertain future, are challenged by a young artist and her radical work. Is the central character, Mavis, just an ordinary older woman; is she Vic’s mother, Ron’s wife, Jean’s lover, or an individual artist exploding onto the scene as an exciting new performance poet?

Empty Mirrors tackles key female issues around age, women’s perception of themselves, coming out at a later age, and the pressures created by family ties and long-term relationships.

27th Letter Theatre is a young company, born as a way to collaborate with other professional creatives to stage shows that we are passionate about – especially new writing. 27th Letter Theatre has produced 3 shows since its inception in 2021, with 2 shows planned for 2024.

The company is female-led and tackles plays with key female characters and themes on the female experience. The atmosphere in rehearsal rooms is incredibly supportive, empathetic, and safe, leading to passionate and intense work that is very satisfying to create and watch. Feedback we have received from audience members includes the quality of the work but also the chemistry between the actors and their relationships that feel authentic. We believe this comes from the environment we create as a female-led company where all our creatives, no matter gender identity, feel safe.

“I had a previous existence.
I’m from the real world.
I had another life.
All blown apart.
A life I might have lived.
A future existence.
Maybe another life.
I would have carried within me.
Look at me.
Am I art?”
