#GETWILDE: Our Favourite Oscar Quotes

WildeSeasonFeatureWeb copy

Here at the Space, we’re hugely excited for our mini Wilde season – featuring not one, but two plays celebrating the legendary Oscar Wilde!  First up is Pregnant Fish Theatre’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, a beautifully gothic musical retelling of the classic novel. They’re followed by international company Suitcase Civilians, who have taken four classic short stories and turned them into Wilde Tales.

As we gear up for demonic pictures, selfish giants and benevolent statues to descend on the Space, we thought we’d share some of our favourite quotes from Oscar himself. We quizzed our staff and volunteers and managed to whittle it down to these top ten.

Think we’ve missed a gem from the list? Tweet us @SpaceArtsCentre using the Festival hashtag – #GETWILDE. You can also follow this for behind-the-scenes updates, audience feedback, reviews and much, much more throughout the Festival!

“Laughter is not at all a bad beginning for a friendship, and it is by far the best ending for one.”

“Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.”

“I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying.”

“Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.”

“The secrets of art are best learned in secret, and that Beauty, like Wisdom, loves the lonely worshipper.”

“I can resist everything except temptation.”

“Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.”

“Nowadays, people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

“The world is a stage, but the play is badly cast.”

“If, with the literate, I am
Impelled to try an epigram,
I never seek to take the credit;
We all assume that Oscar said it.”
(NB: OK – this one was Dorothy Parker. But we think Wilde would have approved!)

#GETWILDE starts from Tuesday. The Picture of Dorian Gray runs from 22nd March – 2nd April, with Wilde Tales following from 5th – 10th April. Book tickets for both shows for just £16 when you quote ‘WILDE’ at checkout.
