‘I am not what I am’
Two empires at war: Christian Venice versus the Islamic Ottoman Turks.
Caught between them, taboo-breaking lovers Desdemona and Othello,
African general and saviour of Venice. But Iago is determined to drag
them into a hell of jealousy and confusion. Black white, male female,
lover and liar all collide in Shakespeare’s thrilling tragedy of
passion, deception and identity crisis.
Flipping the male-dominated traditions of Jacobean theatre on its head,
Painted Stage’s bold all-female production puts three women- Desdemona,
Iago's wife Emilia and the courtesan Bianca- at the centre of the
drama. Using song, mask and dynamic physicality to retell the original
play from their points of view, they ask us; what is it to be possessed
by jealousy, by hatred, by love?

Albert spends all his time wishing life was more like TV. Real life
just isn’t that exciting. He’s much happier lost in a world of other
people’s adventures to bother with his own. But that’s all about to
change. Things in Albert’s life are becoming increasingly peculiar;
fantasy and reality are beginning to blur. He could have sworn his
house used to be surrounded by dry land and that his boss didn’t always
remind him of a Minotaur. Unable to separate fact from fiction, the
race is now on for Albert to find a way out of the strange universe
he’s found himself in, and realise a rather modest adventure of his own.
Albert Shoe in Widescreen is the inaugural devised performance from
brand new touring collective, Compagnie de Bofoo, envisioning one man’s
tireless attempts to overcome all hurdles, break free and finally
achieve his dream. A fantastical comic adventure told using physical
storytelling, puppetry, and live music.
Albert’s adventures see him encounter 1930s B movie style villains,
blockbuster heroes and ancient mythical beasts. No genre is off
limits as the myriad versions of reality he consumes through his
television set every day start to leak into, and eventually take over,
his life.
Albert Shoe in Widescreen explores the idea that we all want to be
extraordinary, to achieve great things and begs the question: what’s so
wrong with being ordinary?
Safe

But wait. Is this a performance, or a hazard?
How far should we go to eliminate risk? We insist on box-ticking,
risk-assessing, and safe-guarding, desperately trying to create a
‘safe’ environment. What must we sacrifice? The voices of
those we are trying to protect?
A satirical piece of theatre that is at once affecting, exasperating
and hilarious.
