Alea Theatre presents
Antagone
Imagine, after a long day at the “office”, Wilde and Sophocles attend the local public house to reflect on a day of creativity. However, when the bartender accidently confuses their orders, the tone is set: long into the evening the dramatists debate morality and political responsibility (among other topical things); one tempered with modern societal cynicism, the other with divine mandate. On exiting at last bells, the writers bid farewell and return their respective manuscripts…or so they think.
Antigone and An Ideal Husband so [fictionally!] entwined, Alea Theatre presents: ‘Antagone’.

For further information and updates on this and other Alea Theatre productions visit their website for details.

Falling Bucket Theatre Company presents
Falling Bucket

A devised performance based on physical, visual theatre and object manipulation by an international duo. Decorated with foreign languages, musical instruments, the theme of inescapable death and the exploration of “falling” itself.

Beware of a falling bucket. You can choose the way you live, but you cannot choose the way you die. Sometimes, you cannot choose the way you live, so you must choose the way youy die. But what if… you can neither choose the way you live, nor you can choose the way you die?

The story takes place in Russia. Anizka is stuck in her grey daily routine. Each day for twenty years is as one: exactly the same. Until one evening she sees something inappropriate in her bedroom. Anizka decides to go on a mission to find her own way to die. However, life doesn’t want to let her go that easily. The story takes a sarcastic turn…

Bittersweet, sarcastic, absurd-like.

By William Shakespeare
Presented by Painted Stage

‘I am not what I am’

Two empires at war: Christian Venice versus the Islamic Ottoman Turks. Caught between them, taboo-breaking lovers Desdemona and Othello, North African general and saviour of Venice. But Iago is determined to drag them into a hell of jealousy and confusion. Black white, male female, lover and liar all collide in Shakespeare’s thrilling tragedy of passion, deception and identity crisis.

Flipping the male-dominated traditions of Jacobean theatre on its head, Painted Stage’s bold all-female production uses song, dynamic physicality and striking set and costume design to blow open Shakespeare’s most relevant and controversial play.

Thu 21st October
8pm
£8/£6

Albert spends all his time wishing life was more like TV. Real life just isn’t that exciting. He’s much happier lost in a world of other people’s adventures to bother with his own. But that’s all about to change. Things in Albert’s life are becoming increasingly peculiar; fantasy and reality are beginning to blur. He could have sworn his house used to be surrounded by dry land and that his boss didn’t always remind him of a Minotaur. Unable to separate fact from fiction, the race is now on for Albert to find a way out of the strange universe he’s found himself in, and realise a rather modest adventure of his own.
Albert Shoe in Widescreen is the inaugural devised performance from brand new touring collective, Compagnie de Bofoo, envisioning one man’s tireless attempts to overcome all hurdles, break free and finally achieve his dream. A fantastical comic adventure told using physical storytelling, puppetry, and live music.
Albert’s adventures see him encounter 1930s B movie style villains, blockbuster heroes and ancient mythical beasts. No genre is off limits as the myriad versions of reality he consumes through his television set every day start to leak into, and eventually take over, his life.
Albert Shoe in Widescreen explores the idea that we all want to be extraordinary, to achieve great things and begs the question: what’s so wrong with being ordinary?

But wait. Is this a performance, or a hazard?
How far should we go to eliminate risk? We insist on box-ticking, risk-assessing, and safe-guarding, desperately trying to create a ‘safe’ environment. What must we sacrifice? The voices of those we are trying to protect?
A satirical piece of theatre that is at once affecting, exasperating and hilarious.

Not About Heroes is a drama about the real-life relationship between the poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen during the First World War.
They met in Craiglockhart Hospital after Sassoon was committed on grounds of mental impairment having published a public protest against the war.
Owen was killed exactly one week before peace was declared, his mother receiving news of his death as the bells declaring armistice chimed out around the country.
This painful and thought provoking story is still relevant to the events of today in war-torn communities all around the world.
